Urban Studies
My background is in Scottish History, Public and Urban Policy. My research interests concern urban sustainablilty, cities and the challenge of sustainable development on social outcomes (social equity/justice). I am also interested in neighbourhood processes, regeneration, housing policy, urban and regional spatial development policy, built environment inc urban design and the role of architecture and planning, as well as the political discourses on Scottish devolution and funding issues.
My own PhD research: Equity in Access to Local Services: Exploring the Impact of Urban Form and the Role of Preferences examined 3 typologies of urban forms at the level of the neighbourhood. It utilised a multi-method strategy incorporating the secondary statistical analysis of a household survey with built environment, accessibility and other Census, SIMD data variables attached; primary work involved interviews with various stakeholders inc residents, planners, transport experts etc.
Binary logistic regression models were developed in examining the relationship between different measures of urban form and whether this affects the frequency of use of local services i.e. local convenience retail and public leisure services (using SPSS/GIS).
