Jan has completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Edinburgh investigating the effects of unemployment on life-satisfaction in different national contexts using survey methods. His second research interest is in the area of political participation and civic culture. Besides his research he has been teaching on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in sociology and methods in the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. In addition Jan has been enjoying to teach discipline-specific training courses in quantitative methods on the Executive MBA program of the Business School, a program for health care professionals in the School of Health and Social Sciences as well as for Master of Public Policy students at the Academy of Government.
Before coming to Edinburgh Jan completed a BA in Integrated Social Sciences at Jacobs University Bremen and worked as a researcher for the German World Values Survey Team.
