Has focused increasingly on a mixed methods approach to research projects with youth, which have been interview, focus group and survey based, firstly in Scotland, but then extending to comparative work, for example with youth in Siberia, both in the post-soviet city and in remote, ethnically diverse rural communities in Siberia. Recent studies have been in collaboration with ethno-sociologists at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk, social anthropologists at the Max Planck Institute in Halle and medical sociologists at the MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit in Glasgow. This work has been supported by awards from the British Academy and the ESRC. Also works jointly with Steve Bruce on religion in modern Scotland. This work has also been supported by an award from the ESRC. He directs the MRes. in Social Research at Aberdeen and is co-director of the EU-China MA at Nankai.
