Introduction to Bayesian data modelling methods

March 14th, 2012. 14.00-17.00. School of Psychology, University of St Andrews
Introduction to Bayesian data modelling methods - Dr Peter Foldiak

Bayesian methods provide a flexible and optimal framework for analysing and modelling data. They offer several advantages in comparison to conventional statistics, such as the ability to compare alternative models and Occam's razor. This seminar will introduce the basic concepts of probability theory (probability, probability distributions, conditional probabilities, Bayes' rule), Bayesian inference and Bayesian model comparison. While this single seminar will not be sufficient to allow you to do perform full Bayesian analysis independently, it will introduce the main ideas, and point you to further reading. Some simple demonstrations of Bayesian methods will also be given, and there will be an opportunity for discussion.

No background in probability theory will be assumed.
