In May, AQMeN held a three day residential training event which was attended by 22 first and second year doctoral students from universities across Scotland. The event was held at Edinburgh Napier University and the theme was Issues of Data Collection, Analysis and Presentation. During the event the students attended presentations from both Scottish Government and Survey Companies who talked about the process of collecting data for large -scale surveys including why and how the data is collected, how it is used, and issues to be addressed during the process. The students were introduced to four large scale Scottish datasets and then split into groups to investigate the data and develop research questions. Over the course of the 3 days, a combination of lectures and practical workshops aimed to take the students through the cycle from developing a research question, conducting analysis and finally presenting their result to an audience of academic, survey company and Scottish Government representatives.
As part of this event, two events were open to all AQMeN members and were attended by over 100 people. A welcome lecture provided by BBC broadcaster and journalist Michael Blastland proved to be a very popular event and a review is included in this newsletter.
An 'Introduction to Advanced Quantitative Techniques' provided an introduction to four advanced methods: Regression for Categorical Data, Multilevel Modelling, Longitudinal Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling. Presentation slides from this event can be found at the link. below. These sessions were very popular and provided a taster for the events being developed by AQMeN that will run over the next year. Further information available in our programme of training can be found below.
The team are already beginning to develop plans for the next doctoral event scheduled to take place in May 2011. Details will be announced on the website early next year.

Local Networks
Now that the core AQMeN network is established we are keen to formulate smaller local networks within individual institutions and local areas.
The Edinburgh network would like to run a local seminar series and members who would be interested in helping to organise, or even present at this should contact us.
All members will shortly receive an email inviting them to be part of a local network as well as the main one. These local networks will be coordinated by the funded partners across Scotland.
If you are interested in coordinating a local network or running an event locally, please contact us.
