The Use of Technology in Teaching Quantitative Methods
Venue: University of Edinburgh
This one day event will introduce participants to a range of resources and effective practice in teaching quantitative methods and statistics to students at graduate level. The main aims of this event are:
- to clarify what kind of teaching resources and datasets are available for teaching within the social sciences
- to illustrate the application of technology in the teaching of statistics using these datasets
The morning session will consist of three expert lectures covering the resources availabe from the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS), the use of administrative datasets in teaching (ADLS) and the use of online resources as a means of teaching statistics. The lectures will also provide background information on the challenges of developing good quality resources and materials for teaching quantitative methods, and highlight aspects of good practice and currently available datasets.
Confirmed speakers for the event are:
- Dr Mark Brown, Cathie Marsh Centre, University of Manchester
Tapping a Gold Mine of Real Survey Data: resources for students and teachers in the social sciences
- Dr Chris Dibben, Administrative Data Liaison Service (ADLS) and Department of Geography, University of St Andrews

- Professor John MacInnes, Head of Sociology, University of Edinburgh
Using Online Resources for Teaching Quantitative Methods
The lectures will be followed by an afternoon of practical workshops which will demonstrate existing resources and highlight how these are used for teaching. Chris Dibben will also offer a drop-in Q&A clinic for anyone with questions relating to the use of Administrative Data. The afternoon workshops are:
- A guide to developing web-based technology, focusing on a postgraduate-level blended learning course on statisitics (John MacInnes)
