Examining patterns of police reporting amongst victims of partner abuse: analysis of the SCJS 2008/09

Examining patterns of police reporting amongst victims of partner abuse: analysis of the SCJS 2008/09

It is widely recognised that victims of partner abuse are among the least likely to report their victimisation to the police. Using data from the 2008/09 sweep of the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey, this seminar will examine patterns of reporting of partner abuse within Scotland. It will illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of using survey data to understand the experiences of partner abuse victims and their interaction with the police. A logistic regression model will be presented suggesting that while many of the factors associated with the reporting of partner abuse are similar to those related to the police coming to know about crime in general, some key differences exist.
