Regression Analysis for Categorical Data - 2 day training course
The deadline for applications for this event has now closed. Successful applicants will be notified by 5pm on Friday 30th July.
Two Day Training Course
11th - 12th August 2010
McCance Building, University of Strathclyde
Course Presenters:
Mark Shephard (University of Strathclyde), Susan McVie (University of Edinburgh), Gordon Hay (University of Glasgow)
Course Content:
This course will explore the use of regression techniques for data that has nominal or ordinal outcome variables. The course will include a review of multiple regression and then focus on three main categorical techniques: binary logistic, ordinal and multinomial regression. Participants will also be given the opportunity to consult the course presenters about their own data at the end of the course.
Click here to see a draft programme. Course delegates will receive a final programme prior to attending the course.
Course Objectives:
- To refresh participants' knowledge of using multivariate statistical methods to analyse data.
- To introduce participants to the use of regression techniques for categorical outcome variables.
- To provide hands on experience of analysing data using SPSS and interpreting the output.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to understand the principles and assumptions underlying binary logistic, ordinal and multinomial regression, and be able to identify the appropriate circumstances in which to use each technique.
- Participants will be able to conduct analysis in each of these techniques using SPSS then understand and interpret the resulting output.
Application Process
There are 25 places available on this course. Places will be allocated following a process of application and priority will be given to students and academic staff in Scotland who meet the selection criteria, and for which the course is free to attend.
Non-academics and academics from outside Scotland may apply and will be placed on a waiting list to be allocated any remaining places. There will be a charge for non-academics and academics outside Scotland to attend as follows:
- Academic students and staff in Scotland - FREE
- Students and Academic staff outside Scotland - £50
- Public and Voluntary Sector - £150
- Private Sector - £300
To apply for the course:
- Sign up for the event using the link below AND
- Complete the application form attached at the bottom of this page and return to events@aqmen.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday 23rd July.
Criteria for Selection:
All participants must be competent in the use of a PC and SPSS. You must also be familiar with basic statistical theory, including inference and hypothesis testing, and understand the principles and assumptions of linear regression. Participants must indicate what they wish to achieve from the course and how they plan to use the techniques that they learn.
