AQMeN Annual Lecture 2010 - Statistics: The Science of the Individual

Professor David Hand, Professor of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London, will deliver this year's Annual Lecture on Thursday 25th November at the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Statistics is often portrayed as the epitome of a depersonalising discipline. It is seen as squeezing out the unique, the special, and the individual, to make bland, and occasionally superficially absurd statements about, for example, the 'average man'. However, there is another way to look at much of statistics. This is that its objective is to combine its aggregate summaries with particular characteristics of individuals to make highly specific and personal statements about those individuals. In this lecture, Professor Hand will develop this notion of statistics as being about the individual, and describe some of his experiences in developing and applying statistical tools aimed at making statements about individuals.David is currently President of the Royal Statistical Society and he has a wide range of research interests,which include multivariate statistics, classification methods, pattern detection, the interface between statistics and computing and the foundations of statistics. His application of statistical methods has covered a number of disciplines, including medicine, psychology and finance, and he has acted as an expert advisor to both public and private sector organisations, including governments, banks and pharmaceutical companies.
