AQMeN PhD Event 2011: Presenting Research to Different Types of Audience
This three-day event is open to second and final year PhD students in Scotland, studying a social science subject and using quantitative methods of data analysis in their research.
Course Content
During this event students will work on their communication and presentation skills and learn about the issues to consider when developing and delivering presentations. A key focus of the event will be to consider the type of audience you are presenting to, the level of technical detail that should be presented and good practice techniques for presenting quantitative data analysis.
This event is not designed to teach new methods of data analysis, but to assist with the presentation of your existing research data. Over the course of the event students will be provided with training in presentation and communications skills and will use their own data to develop a presentation for either an academic or a policy audience.
Who should attend?
This event is appropriate for PhD students in Scotland who are in their second or final year of study. Students should be working on research that falls within a social science discipline and which uses intermediate or advanced quantitative methods of statistical data analysis. The event is appropriate for students who have completed their data collection and have final or interim results that can be developed into a presentation, and who wish to develop their skills in presenting data to different audiences.
Why attend?
This course will provide an intensive period of learning in which you will meet and work alongside other students at a similar stage to yourself who are also involved in using advanced quantitative methods. The course will equip you with the practical skills needed to present your data clearly and effectively to both an academic and a policy audience. It will teach you about structuring your content and using different forms of visualisation technique to illustrate your findings. You will also learn techniques for dealing with nerves and for handling feedback.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are:
- To provide practical instruction on the most effective ways of presenting and communicating quantitative research data.
- To provide guidance on good practice for deciding on the content and structure of presentations for delivery to academic and policy audiences.
Learning outcomes
Following this event you would be expected to be able to:
- communicate your research findings effectively to a wide range of audiences
- present your data in a structured and clear way that makes an impact
- develop your evaluation skills in understanding the needs of data users
- achieve confidence in delivering a presentation and engaging with the audience
- appreciate different forms of media for disseminating information
Pre-requisite criteria
To qualify for attendance at this event, you must be:
- in your second or final year of a PhD (either full or part-time equivalent)
- studying a social science subject and using intermediate and advanced quantitative methods
- completed all or part of your quantitative data collection and/or analysis and have final or interim results to present
Follow-up
Students who attend this event will be required to attend a follow-up event on Wednesday 17th August, at which they will be expected to provide a report and short presentation on how they have benefited from attending the event. Certificates of attendance will be presented to students at the follow-up event and AQMeN reserve the right to withhold the certificates of anyone who fails to attend the follow-up meeting or provide suitable feedback.
