AQMeN 2011 PhD Conference - Generating New Knowledge through Quantitative Approaches to Social Science

This is a new and exciting event open to all PhD students in the UK, studying a social science subject, and using quantitative methods of data analysis in their doctoral research.

The aims of the event are to:PHD Students

  • Provide students an opportunity to present their work to academics and other PhD students and receive feedback
  • Provide a networking opportunity to establish contacts with other students and researchers who use quantitative methods
  • Identify ways in which doctoral students may contribute to wider social and economic development through contributing to the knowledge base in Scotland

Professor Ian Diamond, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen and former Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council will open the conference with a talk about the role of quantitative research in generating new knowledge.

Presentations from PhD students will be organised into panels according to broad themes which will be identified following submission of detailed abstracts.  Each panel session will last for 1 ½ hours, including time for questions.

There is no charge to attend this conference, although all delegates must register with AQMeN regardless of whether they wish to present a paper or not.

Students will receive refreshments, lunch and a book of abstracts from the event.

Places at this event are limited so early booking is essential to secure a place.

Evening Lecture
This event will be followed by an evening lecture 'The Power of Numbers', presented by Nigel Hawkes, Director of Straight Statistics.  Click here for more details.  This event will be open to all AQMeN members and will also launch a three-day training event for PhD students on Presenting Research to Different Types of Audience taking place 17-19 May. 

Hardship bursaries
Students seeking to attend should check with their institutions about possible sources of financial support to attend this event.  Some funding may be available from AQMeN to support students' travel and accommodation in situations where no other funding is available.  Students who wish to apply for a hardship bursary must apply in advance, no later than 6th May, providing details of the costs involved.  Your PhD supervisor may be requested to support your request for a bursary.  Applications for funding should be sent to events@aqmen.ac.uk.
